Meet Your English Guide

This is who I am.

My name is Gary Devino. I hold a Master of Arts (MA) in English and a Master of Education (M.Ed) in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). During my 50-year career as a teacher, a college professor, and a tutor, I have helped students from ages 6 to college students excel in English. My emphasis is on developing fundamental English language skills, including reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar, and on boosting students' ability to analyze their language use. My students scored highly on various standardized tests and got into the best colleges and universities in the country. As a college professor, I have been teaching students various aspects of the English language.

This is what I promise.

According to the program the student chooses, he/she/they will get handouts, instructions, directions, and worksheets that will be used for the presentation of the material as well as for the profound practice. I am confident that the highest result can be reached if the following requirements are honored:

a) The student must be willing to improve his/her/their English. The most difficult here is the fact that conversational English might be getting in the way of studying academic English, so the student must stay focused on studying the language on a higher level than he/she/they are used to in everyday life.

b) Even though tutoring can be provided without homework assignments, the student is expected to agree that working with worksheets between sessions guarantees success. Homework assignments must be done for every class.

c) For productive moving at a steady pace, the student must follow my instructions, directions, and handouts. Doing work by the sound instead of by the rule will keep the student at the same level of conversational English and will not bring the desired result.

Writing Skills

Before writing essays and stories, students should learn how to apply different methods of collecting information and organizing this information in their potential writing. It is important to learn the variety of sentences that will help make the writing explicit and reader-friendly. Students must learn how to write well-structured paragraphs before organizing them in a solid essay. Finalizing an essay through proofreading and editing will create an interesting piece of writing.

Vocabulary Enrichment

Reading and writing cannot be productive without knowing a lot of words, including synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and their usage. Your vocabulary shows your social and educational statuses, and it helps you succeed in your everyday and professional life. New words will not only be explained, but the variety of their meanings will also be shown, and they will also be widely used in different speaking and writing assignments.

Grammar Improvement

English, like any other language, can be used on a conversational/informal level and on an academic/formal level. Since everyone can easily acquire conversational English in everyday life, in my class, I aim to teach students academic/formal English that they will need in formal educational settings and professional environments. During sessions, students learn how to identify mistakes and how to correct them. In many cases, students will learn how to double-check their corrections.

Reading Skills

Reading is not merely recognizing words and putting them together. Very often, students can retell the story that they have read, but they have a problem with understanding the idea(s) that the author is trying to convey by using different literary tools; therefore, I teach students to think when they read. Analytical reading helps students become good writers. Besides that, while reading and analysing the material, students become familiar with a variety of ways to express their ideas orally and in writing.
